A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
