Beijing Slams United States of ‘Double Standards’ Over Trade Levy Warning

Donald Trump’s newest ultimatum to introduce an further full import duty on items imported from China has been described as a “prime illustration” of United States’ contradictory behavior, per the Chinese government.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry also stated that the nation could enact its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the US President follows through on his warning, adding that the country was “not afraid” of a looming trade conflict.

This past Friday, the former president hit back at Beijing’s move to tighten its regulations for exports of rare earth minerals, accusing Beijing of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the international market “captive”.

Additionally, he warned to withdraw from a scheduled summit with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in Seoul later this month.

The former president’s remarks on that day rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

His comments revived concerns of a trade war between the US and China.

This past spring, the two sides had consented to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the two countries.

Consequently, American import duties on Chinese imports subject to an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering China incur a ten percent duty.

China’s latest remarks – published by the relevant government department in the manner of written responses to press queries – echoed terminology from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

They criticised American limits on exports on semiconductors and chips while supporting the country’s own restrictions on exports on key elements as “standard procedures” to protect state interests and that of all nations.

The spokesperson remarked that for “many years”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, abused overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to engage with the Chinese government,” their representative commented.

“China’s position on a tariff war has always been consistent: we do not want one, but we are fearless of one.”

Last week, China revealed it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on key elements and other materials vital for high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a key move, as the nation handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in goods such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.

New remarks from the US and China are being seen by analysts as a means of strengthening positions in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a talks between Trump and Xi Jinping, scheduled at a conference in Seoul before month’s end, will take place as planned.
