Close to 25,000 Left Without Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Weather Systems

Around twenty-five thousand households in south-east Queensland woke up experiencing outages on Monday morning after powerful weather events passed over the state, bringing powerful gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Massive Ice Stones and Broad Impact

Homeowners observed giant hailstones measuring up to 7 centimeters in some areas. Weather authorities announced that various areas across the state had been impacted by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the damaged zones, with dozens of response units deployed to manage the extensive power failures.

Victorian Storm Challenges

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 households in Victoria also faced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area saw its wettest day in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services responded to 598 requests for assistance across the region, mainly for structural issues but also for downed trees and inundation.

• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham - nearly 180 calls for assistance

During the peak on Sunday, more than 28k power users in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were expected to linger along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coast.

Tomorrow was expected to become the heaviest precipitation period, with continued severe weather risk anticipated across multiple regions of both areas.

Medical authorities alerted that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.
