Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
