Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
